• Use

1. 과거에 끝난 행위에 대해여 말할 때

   We met in 1988.(우리는 1988년에 만났다)
   He went to the bank yesterday.(그는 어제 그 은행에 갔다)
   She left two minutes ago.(그녀는 2분 전에 떠났다)

2. 스토리 상에서 계속 이어지는 행동을 묘사 할때

   Mary walked into the room and stopped. She listened carefully. She heard a noise coming from behind the curtain. She threw curtain open, and then she saw...
   

3. 과거의 특정 상황이나 과거 습관에 대해 말할 때

   When I was a child, we lived in a small house by the sea(내가 어릴때 우리 가족은 바닷가에 작은 집에서 살았다)
   We used to live in a small house.(우리는 작은 집에 살았었다)
   I used to walk on the beach with my dog.(나는 강아지와 해변을 걷곤 했다)

과거 시제와 같이 쓰이는 표현들..

• 어미 변화형 + -ed
  • 동사에 -ed 를 붙이는 경우.
    worked     wanted     helped     washed
  • 동사의 마지막 음절이 e 로 끝나는 경우 -d 만 붙인다.
    liked    used     robbed    cared
  • 동사가 1음절이고 모음이 자음과 자음 사이에 있는 경우 마지막 자음을 하나 추가 한다.
    stopped    planned    robbed    tinned
  • 자음이 y 나 w 로 끝나는 경우에는 그대로 -ed 만 붙인다.
    played    showed
  • 대부분의 2음절 동사들은 강세가 두번째에 있을 경우, 마지막 자음을 하나 더 추가 한다.
    pre'ferred    ad'mitted
  • 동사의 마지막 음절이 y 로 끝나는 경우, -ied 로 바뀐다.
    carried    hurried    buried

2.과거 진행형

• Use

과거 진행형은 과거형과 자주 어울리는데, 과거형은 단순한 시점을 나타내는 반면, 과거 진행형은 그보다 긴 행위에 초점이 맞추어져 있다.
When i woke up this morning, the birds were singing and the sun was shining.(내가 아침에 일어 났을 때, 새들은 지저귀고 햇쌀이 내려 쮀고 있었다)

1. 과거 어떤 특정한 시점 이후에 진행된 사건이나 행동에 대해 말할 때

   I walked past your house last night. There was an awful lot of noise. What were you doing?(어잿 밤 내가 너의 집앞을 지날때 엄청 시끄럽던데, 뭐하고 있었니?)
   AT 7.00 this morning, I was having breakfast.(오늘 아침 7시에 난 아침을 먹고 있었어)

2. 과거 시점에서 어떤 행위나 사건에 대한 묘사

   He looked lovely. She was wearing a green cotton dress. Her eyes were shining in the light of the candles.(그는 사랑스러운 눈으로 바라보았다. 그녀는 녹색 무명 드레스를 입고 있었다. 그녀의 눈은 촉불 불빛에 빛나고 있었다)

3. 어떤 것으로 인하여 행위가 중단 될 때

   When the phone rang, i was having a bath.(전화가 울렸을때, 나는 샤워를 하고 있었다)
   We were playing tennis, whe it started to rain.(비가 오기 시작할때, 우리는 테니스를 치고 있었다)

4. 끝마치지 못한 행위를 설명할 때

   I was reading a book during the flight.(비행동안 나는 책을 읽었다 --> 다 읽지 못함을 의미)
   I watched a film during the flight.(비행동안 나는 영화를 보았다 --> 다 본 것을 의미)

When Karen arrived, We had dinner.(케런이 도착하고 우리는 저녁을 먹었다)	When Karen arrived, We was having dinner.(케런이 도착했을 때 우리는 저녁을 먹는 중이었다)
Tom burnt his hand when he was cooking the dinner. (탐은 저녁을 만드다가 손을 데였다)
I saw you in the park yesterday. You were sitting on the grass and reading a book.(내가 자네를 어제 공원에서 봤는데, 자네는 잔듸에 앉아 책을 읽고 있었지)

이 놈들은 예외 know/want/believe

• We were good friends. We knew each other well.( ' we were knowing'은 안됨)
  
• I was enjoying the party but Chris wanted to go home.( ' was wanting' 은 안됨)
